Kadaisi Vivasayi

In a Tamil village only one man still works the land: Maayandi. The others have sold up, gone to the city, or stopped. As the village struggles with drought, rice is needed for a temple ceremony and he is the only producer. Then dead peacocks are found on his field. The peacock is India's protected national bird; Maayandi is arrested and, in his nineties, goes to jail. M. Manikandan writes and directs. Nallandi plays Maayandi; he is not a professional actor but an actual farmer. Vijay Sethupathi appears in support. The shoot spread across years because the film follows the real agricultural calendar: sowing, growth, harvest. The crop you see on screen was actually grown. The subject is structural rather than individual. Maayandi is not a hero, just the person still doing what nobody else does. The narrative shows why farming was abandoned, why the young left, and how the law speaks to a villager. Nallandi died after the film was released, and the production became a record of both a farmer and a way of living. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian independent cinema, rural narrative, and films made with non professionals. Who it is not for: the pace is very slow, little happens, and the film proposes no solution.
