Kuttrame Thandanai

Ravi lives with a condition that narrows his field of vision; it keeps closing and treatment is possible but expensive. He has no money. He lives in a block of flats and hears the sounds from the flat opposite. One night he realises a woman is being killed. He sees the killer. He does not go to the police. Instead he makes contact with the killer and asks for money; that is how he will pay for the operation. The blackmail begins, but others in the same building saw something that night too. M. Manikandan directs. Vidharth plays Ravi; Rahman and Aishwarya Rajesh are in the cast. It is in Tamil. The title rests on a saying: the crime is itself the punishment, and the narrative builds that directly as a question. The moral ground is murky; no character is entirely in the right and the film defends nobody. Manikandan had drawn attention with his previous film, and this is his move toward genre. The loss of sight is both the subject and the form; the framing at times shows only as much as the character sees. The block of flats is used in detail and neighbourly relations are part of the plot. Its limit is pace; the narrative moves slowly and the tension does not rise to the expected level. Who it is for: viewers who like Tamil independent thrillers and narratives built on moral uncertainty. Who it is not for: the pace is slow, the characters cold, and the ending contested.
