What Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet Is About
Mustafa, a poet in exile, is released after years to go home. On the road to the harbour he is accompanied by Almitra, the mute daughter of the woman who brings him his food, and along the way people ask him to speak. Each address becomes a separate piece of animation, with the sections on love, children, work, freedom and death drawn by different directors from different countries in entirely different techniques. Roger Allers directed the main narrative and the connective material. Kahlil Gibran's 1923 book has kept selling for a century, which also explains the difficulty of bringing it to film: the poetry finds its visual equivalent while the story around it stays thin. Liam Neeson voices the poet. Who it is for: anyone who wants to see several animation techniques together, and readers of Gibran. Who it is not for: viewers wanting a strong plot.
