What Kaspar Hauser Is About
In May 1828 a youth of about sixteen is found in the streets of Nuremberg, unable to speak properly and knowing nothing of where he came from. It emerges that this boy, given the name Kaspar Hauser, had been kept since infancy in a cellar, allowed contact with no one. The film works through the supposition built around who he was: a child perhaps put out of the way because of a noble family’s line of succession. As Hauser learns to speak, to write and to live in a city, the question of who hid him does not leave him; in 1833 he is stabbed to death and no culprit is found. André Eisermann appears in Peter Sehr’s hundred and thirty nine minute German film.
