Kedarnath

Kedarnath is a pilgrimage site in the mountains of northern India. Mansoor is a pittu, one of the porters who carry pilgrims up on their backs, and he is Muslim. Mukku is a priest's daughter. Something starts between them and the town will not allow it. Then, in June 2013, the flood comes. Abhishek Kapoor directs. Sushant Singh Rajput plays Mansoor and Sara Ali Khan plays Mukku, in her first film. The background is real. Thousands died in the Uttarakhand floods of June 2013, and the Kedarnath area was among the worst hit; the temple stood and everything around it was destroyed. The second subject is the pilgrimage economy. The region depends entirely on the money pilgrims bring: hotels, porters, helicopter tours and construction. The film implies the disaster had as much to do with that building as with nature. It met protests on release. Some groups objected to a relationship between a Muslim man and a Hindu woman and tried to prevent screenings in several states. Sushant Singh Rajput died in 2020, and this is among the small number of films he left. Who it is for: viewers who follow Indian melodrama and productions built on real disasters. Who it is not for: the romance and the disaster do not fit together, and the last half hour rests entirely on effects.
