What Keep the River on Your Right: A Modern Cannibal Tale Is About
In 1955 the painter Tobias Schneebaum walked into the Peruvian Amazon with no guide, no map and a single instruction: keep the river on your right. He came out of the forest a year later, and what he lived through shaped both his life and his art. Forty-five years on, an old man now, he goes back both to Peru and to the Asmat region of New Guinea, to meet again the people he had lived among, loved, and dreamed about badly for decades. The documentary by the siblings Laurie Gwen Shapiro and David Shapiro is less an adventure than a portrait of a man who never came to terms with his own past. Schneebaum was an artist living openly as a gay man in the fifties, which kept him at the edge of both worlds. The cannibal emphasis in the film’s title and in the record’s summary is the language of publicity; the film itself has far less appetite for it. It won an Independent Spirit Award in 2001.
