What Kenny Is About

Kenny Smyth works for a company that rents portable toilets. He hauls cubicles to everything from the biggest festivals to the smallest church socials, clears blockages, does the job nobody wants to look at, and describes it without complaint. The film follows him as far as an international pumper and cleaner expo in Nashville. Directed by Clayton Jacobson, this mockumentary is built on a character written and played by his brother Shane Jacobson. The idea came from stories heard from the employees of a real company, whose owner put up much of the budget for the feature. Kenny's father is played by the Jacobsons' own father, Ronald Jacobson. The real subject is not toilets but invisible labour and the disrespect that comes with it. Kenny carries that knowingly and without resentment, and that is the feeling underneath the comedy. Who it's for: Viewers who like Australian humour, the mockumentary form, and films about people inside ordinary jobs. Who it's not for: Much of the humour is toilet humour and the pace is slow. Anyone wanting sharp or ironic comedy will find it too gentle.
