What Kiki Is About
Twenty five years after Paris Is Burning, Sara Jordeno films the generation that came after it: the Kiki scene, New York's younger ballroom circuit. The vogue competitions are here in full, but the camera keeps its attention on what surrounds them, on homelessness, on getting healthcare, on families that shut the door, and on the houses built to stand in for those families. Twiggy Pucci Garcon, mother of the Opulent Haus of Pucci, is credited alongside Jordeno, and the scene's own phrase, not about us without us, becomes the working method rather than a slogan. Seven lives are followed over four years. It premiered at Sundance in 2016 and took the Teddy Award for best documentary in Berlin.
