Andrew Young What King in the Wilderness Is About
The documentary covers the last two years of Martin Luther King’s life, from the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 to his assassination in 1968. These were the years when he was criticised from every direction: by white supremacists on one side, the Johnson administration on another, and young Black activists who found his methods too conciliatory on a third. Peter Kunhardt builds the film out of what the people close to King have to say, with Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte, Andrew Young, John Lewis and Clarence Jones giving personal recollections and previously unpublished archive footage set between them. What emerges is not a monument but a man who is tired, increasingly isolated and not always sure what to do next. An HBO production, it aired in April 2018.
