What King Lear Is About
Grigori Kozintsev built his Shakespeare adaptation on Boris Pasternak's Russian translation, with a score Dmitri Shostakovich composed specifically for the film. Old Lear divides his kingdom among his daughters and measures each share by how ornately she declares her love for him; when Cordelia, the youngest and the only honest one, refuses to flatter him, he casts her out. Gloucester makes a comparable mistake about his own sons, and that story runs alongside the first. Kozintsev pulls the play out of the palace and into stone, mud and roads crowded with displaced people, so the frame is rarely empty of them. Jüri Järvet plays Lear, and this turned out to be the director's last film.
