What The Overcoat Is About
Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg's 1926 film folds two Gogol stories, Nevsky Prospekt and The Overcoat, into a single narrative. The literary theorist Yuri Tynyanov wrote the script, and the small clerk's collapse over a coat appears on screen not as a faithful adaptation but as a form reinterpreted. It came out of FEKS, the Factory of the Eccentric Actor, and carries traces of circus, music hall, puppet theatre and American silent comedy. The result is an expressionist, warped and uneasy Petersburg, and one of the significant works of the Soviet silent avant garde.
