What The New Babylon Is About
Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg's 1929 silent film takes on the Paris Commune of 1871. Louise, a shop girl at the department store that gives the film its name, joins the Communards, while a conscripted young peasant who is in love with her ends up on the other side of the barricade. Their story sits inside the crushing of a revolution. It is the best known work of the FEKS school, and its heightened performances, hard light and near-caricature bourgeois faces were considered extreme even in the Soviet cinema of the day. The twenty-three-year-old Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his first film score for it; the music was treated as lost for decades and was only properly restored to the film in the eighties.
