In early 1980s Leningrad young people who want to play rock perform in state-approved clubs and in flats. A known musician opens the way for a new band, and an undefined relationship forms between him, the singer and his wife. The film is in black and white with colour music sequences that ignore the rules cut into it; those passages are deliberately unreal and each time a character says it did not happen. The narrative conveys censorship not directly but through how narrow the permitted space is. Kirill Serebrennikov directed. The film was completed while he was under house arrest and he could not attend its festival screening. Who it's for: those who like music films and the atmosphere of a period. Who it's not for: viewers wanting straight biography; the film keeps mixing the real with the imagined.
