Kipps

Arthur Kipps works as an apprentice at a draper’s shop. He goes to evening classes to better himself. In class he takes an interest in his teacher, Helen Walshingham. She, mindful of the difference in class, keeps her distance. Then unexpected news arrives. Kipps inherits a large fortune from a grandfather he never met. He now has a house and a great deal of money. Once the inheritance is known, the people around him change their manner. Helen and her brother Ronnie take an interest in him. Kipps tries to fit into this new circle. But Ann Pornick, his childhood friend, is still there. As the wedding approaches he loses his nerve. In the end he goes off with Ann. The two of them marry, though what they want is not the same. Ann wants a simple life while Kipps wants to keep living large. The film says through a novel that money does not bring happiness. Michael Redgrave and Diana Wynyard appear in the hundred and eleven minute film, a British production Carol Reed finished in 1941.
