What Kokoko Is About
Liza, who works at a museum in St Petersburg, and Vika, up from the provinces, meet when they are both robbed on a train. The two are nothing alike: one reads books and puts on exhibitions, the other talks loudly and does whatever she feels like. They become friends all the same, and Vika moves into Liza's flat for a while. Avdotya Smirnova's Russian film puts the distance between the educated class and everybody else into comedy. The joke lands on both sides: Vika's coarseness is a target, and so is Liza's admiration for her own tolerance. Anna Mikhalkova and Yana Troyanova take the leads. The tone is light at first and gets harder as it goes.
