What The Tolstoy Defence Is About
In an infantry regiment near Tula a private strikes his officer; a military tribunal and an execution await him. Grigory Kolokoltsev, a young lieutenant in the same regiment and full of progressive ideas, asks Count Leo Tolstoy, who lives nearby, for help, and Tolstoy agrees to defend the man. Avdotya Smirnova directed, with Anna Parmas and the Tolstoy scholar Pavel Basinsky on the screenplay. It won the prize for best screenplay at Kinotavr in 2018. The events are real: this is the 1866 case of Private Vasily Shabunin, and Tolstoy’s only appearance as defence counsel in a courtroom. Shabunin was shot, and Tolstoy carried it for the rest of his life. The summary in the record carries em dashes that came in from an external source.
