What Kongo Is About
Flint is a ruthless man who lives in a wheelchair. In a remote part of Africa he has set himself up as a god, ruling the local people through superstition and stage trickery and the handful of white people around him through plain cruelty. The only reason he keeps going is revenge on the man who destroyed his life. The film is adapted from the stage play of the same name, with Walter Huston repeating the role he played on Broadway, and it is also a remake of Tod Browning and Lon Chaney's West of Zanzibar from 1928. It belongs to the period before Hollywood tightened its own rules: the sadism and degradation are right there on screen. Its depiction of Africans carries the racist conventions of the time unchanged.
