Directed by Mirosław Bork, this Polish crime comedy comes from the life of Czesław Śliwa, one of the great swindlers of the Polish People’s Republic. The frame is the trial that followed his largest piece of work: he set up a fake Austrian consulate in a city in southern Poland and served as consul there for more than six months, issuing documents, throwing banquets and meeting local officials. Piotr Fronczewski plays him. Bork won the Silver Shell for best director at San Sebastián in 1989.
