What Kummeli Stories Is About
A war breaks out between Luxembourg and Finland, and the film hangs independent stories inside that absurd frame: a rally team, a male couple going fishing, two layabouts in their last days of school, a haunted hotel. The connection between the episodes is thin, and that was never the point. Each one sets up its own joke and finishes it. Kummeli was a sketch group hugely popular on Finnish television in the 1990s; this film is one of the team's ventures into cinema. Matti Grönberg directed. The humour rests largely on the absurd and on how seriously the characters take themselves: nobody is trying to be funny, the situation itself is ridiculous. It is barely known outside Finland but counts as a generational film at home.
