What Kung Fu Stuntmen Is About
Wei Junzi’s documentary is about the stunt performers and action directors of Hong Kong cinema and about their golden age, running from the sixties into the eighties. It came out of more than two years of research and takes in close to a hundred interviews; Sammo Hung, Yuen Woo-ping, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Tsui Hark, Ching Siu-tung and Andrew Lau are among those who speak. These are the people who built fight sequences nobody anywhere else was building, and they did it with almost no safety net, or as the choreographer Yuen Bin puts it, they risked their lives for the stunts. The film covers seventy years of the trade and its effect on cinema everywhere, and it opened in August 2021.
