Frederick Wiseman set up his camera inside the Paris Opera Ballet for twelve weeks in 2007, and the result follows seven productions as they are built: Wayne McGregor’s Genus, Angelin Preljocaj’s Le Songe de Médée, Mats Ek’s La Maison de Bernarda, Pierre Lacotte’s Paquita, Nureyev’s Nutcracker, Pina Bausch’s Orpheus and Eurydice, and Sasha Waltz’s Romeo and Juliet. The method is the one Wiseman has used for decades: no interviews, no narration, no explanatory titles. Brigitte Lefèvre, who ran the company at the time, appears in meeting after meeting, because the aim is to show how the house functions as a single organism rather than to film a stage. It premiered at Venice in September 2009. Aurélie Dupont, Marie-Agnès Gillot and Agnès Letestu are among the dancers.
