What Near Death Is About
The film takes place in the medical intensive care unit of Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and is about how people face death. We watch the complicated relations among patients, families, doctors, nurses, hospital staff and clergy, and the personal, ethical, medical, psychological, religious and legal questions that surface while deciding whether or not to give life sustaining treatment to a dying patient. Frederick Wiseman filmed in the unit for six weeks, and what came out of it runs close to six hours. There is no music, no narration and no interview; the only thing heard is the sound of the ward itself. The director steers nobody, he simply stays in the room.
