L'Amour Fou

Yves Saint Laurent died in 2008. A year later Pierre Bergé, his life partner and business partner, put the art collection the two of them had gathered over fifty years up for auction. The documentary turns around that sale: as the paintings come off the walls Bergé talks, telling everything from their meeting to the death. While the objects are being boxed up a life is also being taken apart piece by piece. The life being described was not an easy one: Saint Laurent took over Dior at twenty-one, became the best known designer in the world within a short time, and sank at the same speed into depression, alcohol and pills. Pierre Thoretton's documentary runs almost entirely on Bergé's voice, and that is also its limit: one person tells the story and that person is inside the events. Ninety-eight minutes. The film is not about fashion but about loss.
