Marion Cotillard
Cécile Corbel What Land of the Bears Is About
Guillaume Vincent's 2014 French documentary was shot on the Kamchatka Peninsula. It follows a year in the daily life of five brown bears: coming out of winter, the first steps of the cubs, the salmon season, the fights, the hunger. The region is largely away from human settlement, so the animals live without minding the camera and the footage repays that. Marion Cotillard narrates the French version. It follows the familiar shape of the nature documentary: the endearing moments, the tense ones, the turn of the seasons. What sets it apart is the landscape and how closely it records bear behaviour.
