What Last Chance Harvey Is About
A man flies to London for his daughter's wedding, discovers he is surplus to it, and starts a conversation with a stranger at the airport. The film is that conversation, extended. What carries it is the mismatch in tempo between Dustin Hoffman, who keeps explaining himself, and Emma Thompson, who has heard a great many explanations and stopped believing them. Anyone waiting for the grand gestures of a studio romance will be left holding very little, because the risk on offer here is smaller and much more recognisable: two adults agreeing to look faintly ridiculous in front of each other.
