What Last Cowboy Standing Is About
In 1982 an eighteen-year-old named Rupert, weighed down by guilt, tries to remember and make sense of the past in the middle of a chaotic present. The film follows two brothers from the early 1970s to the early 1980s, from childhood into adulthood, in Kauniainen and Hyryla on the edge of Helsinki. Zaida Bergroth’s first feature is adapted from Antti Raivio’s 1991 play of the same name, staged at Q-teatteri during that decade. It won the Flash Forward prize at the Busan International Film Festival. Lauri Tilkanen plays Rupert, with Tommi Korpela, Elina Knihtila and a then very young Onni Tommila also in the cast. The original title means the boys of Skavabole, the Swedish name for Hyryla.
