My Father and My Son

A man imprisoned after the military coup, his health broken, returns to his father's village with his small son. The father has still not forgiven him. The film keeps the politics in the background and puts its weight on three generations living in one house; the narrative uses the child's point of view to show what the adults cannot say. It moves constantly between comedy and drama. Cagan Irmak wrote and directed, with Fikret Kuskan, Cetin Tekindor and Humeyra. It became one of the films with the most lasting hold on audiences in Turkey. A real warning: it rests on torture during the coup period and on a death. The ending is very heavy.
