What Last Holiday Is About

George Bird sells agricultural machinery and has never taken a risk in his life. He goes to the doctor, is told he has a fatal illness and has very little time left. On the doctor's advice he takes out his savings and goes to an expensive seaside hotel. With nothing left to lose he starts saying what he thinks, and the more plainly he speaks the more the people around him take him seriously. The difficulty is that the diagnosis is wrong. Written by J. B. Priestley and directed by Henry Cass, the film takes a quiet, sharp look at the English class system. Alec Guinness plays George, in one of the roles that established him as a leading man.
