What Late Blossom Is About
Choo Chang-min’s 2011 South Korean film runs the stories of two elderly couples in the same neighbourhood in parallel. Kim Man-suk delivers milk at dawn on a motorbike, swears constantly and is kind underneath it, and on a slope he meets Ms Song, who lives alone by collecting and selling waste paper. Jang Kun-bong works in a car park and looks after a wife with Alzheimer’s, working from dawn until late and then coming home to care for her. The film carries love in old age and the labour of caring at the same time, and asks pity for neither. Adapted from Kang Full’s webcomic, it became an unexpected hit by word of mouth.
