What Le Plaisir Is About
Three Maupassant stories, with a narrator who speaks as the author himself. In the first, an old man wears a mask of youth to keep dancing at balls, because he cannot accept his age. In the long middle section, the woman who runs a brothel takes her girls to the country for a niece's first communion, and for one day they are somebody else. In the last, the relationship between a painter and his model goes wrong. Ophüls runs the camera through windows, up staircases and into crowds. Light on the surface, and it hurts.
