Lemming

A French thriller. Alain is an engineer working in home automation. He has moved to a new town, built an orderly life with his wife, and his work is going well. They invite his boss and his boss's wife to dinner. The dinner is a disaster. The woman is drunk, aggressive, and says things at the table that unsettle everyone; the night ends badly. The next day the sink will not drain. When Alain opens the pipe an animal comes out: a lemming. The animal does not live in France; it is found in Scandinavia, and how it got there cannot be explained. From there the film slides slowly off its base. Strange things happen in the house, his wife's behaviour changes, and the narrative stops separating dreams from what is happening. What the film is interested in is who is who: a personality seems to continue inside another body, and the film explains this nowhere. The home automation is not a coincidence. Alain's work is making houses run by themselves; his own house does the opposite and goes out of control. Laurent Lucas plays Alain and Charlotte Gainsbourg plays his wife. André Dussollier plays the boss and Charlotte Rampling his wife. Dominik Moll directed. Who it is for: anyone who likes psychological thrillers that do not explain and the cold tone of European cinema. Who it is not for: anyone who wants resolution; the film leaves its questions unanswered and does not count that a fault.
