Lemon and Poppy Seed Cake

Two sisters, separated as teenagers, come back together in a small town on Mallorca. A woman they know nothing about has left them a bakery, and they have come to sell it. Anna has barely left the island and stayed in a marriage to a man she no longer loves; Marina travels the world as a doctor for an aid organisation. The more they dig into the bakery and the woman behind it, the more of the family's old accounts they have to open. Benito Zambrano refuses to reduce sisterhood to a reconciliation story: what the two women do not say to each other takes up more room than what they do. The film also shows a side of the island the tourist brochures leave out, at the town's own pace. Elia Galera and Eva Martín keep it just short of melodrama. It comes from Cristina Campos's novel.
