What Alone Is About
María lives alone in a decaying flat in Seville. She left her family in the countryside because she could not stand her father's authority any longer. She cleans for a living, drinks too much, and is pregnant by a man who will not see her. When her father is brought to the city for an operation, her mother moves into the flat. For the first time in years the two women are under one roof. Benito Zambrano's first feature won five Goyas; María Galiana, who plays the mother, took best supporting actress and Ana Fernández best new actress. The film does not inflate the poverty or the loneliness; it tells the whole of it through how the two women look at each other.
