What Les Biches Is About
Frederique, wealthy and bored, picks up a young woman drawing on the pavement in Paris and takes her to her villa in Saint Tropez. A relationship begins between them, then both become interested in the same architect and the arrangement turns slowly into a game of power. Claude Chabrol watches the bourgeoisie from his usual cold distance; nobody raises their voice and everything comes apart politely. Stephane Audran won the best actress prize at Berlin for playing Frederique. It is generally taken as the start of the director's finest period.
