What Les Misérables Is About
Jean Valjean, sentenced to the galleys for stealing a loaf of bread, changes his name years later and builds another life. Inspector Javert will not let it go; his fidelity to the letter of the law has hardened into obsession. The pursuit consumes both of their lives, and Valjean eventually finds himself in the middle of the student rising in Paris. Richard Boleslawski's 1935 version is among the best known American adaptations of Victor Hugo's novel, with Fredric March as Valjean and Charles Laughton as Javert. What people talk about is Laughton, who plays Javert less as a man without mercy than as a man imprisoned by his own rules.
