What Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992 Is About
John Ridley’s documentary tells the 1992 Los Angeles uprising not as a single event but through the decade that led up to it. The acquittal of the officers who beat Rodney King sits at its centre, but before arriving there Ridley layers accounts from people across the city’s neighbourhoods, classes and backgrounds: how policing was experienced, daily life in South Los Angeles, the tension building between Korean American shopkeepers and Black customers, and a justice system that kept failing at the same point. There is no narrator; everything moves through firsthand testimony, and people who ended up on opposite sides of the events speak in the same film. ABC News’ first theatrical production, it came out in April 2017 and gives almost all of its 144 minutes to those witnesses.
