Let the Women Wait!

Stavros Tsiolis's 1998 Greek film follows three brothers-in-law spending the summer by a lake. While their families holiday on an island, the three are left to themselves and set off after brief romances. The humour comes from those attempts leading nowhere. All three are middle-aged and none quite knows what he is doing; the narrative does not humiliate them and gives the absurdity from an affectionate place. Tsiolis is a director who works with dialogue and long scenes. The cast includes figures from Greek music and theatre. The narrative produces no events; the weight lies in the talk and in the idle time by the lake. Who it's for: those who like Greek comedy and quiet provincial narrative. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a driven narrative; the film is almost entirely loafing.
