What Love Under the Date-Tree Is About
A merchant has just buried his wife. Not long after the funeral he sets off wandering the Peloponnese with a friend. The friend is a conductor, and the merchant takes him for a rival in love. He is carrying a photograph, and a date tree can be seen in it. To his mind, the existence of that tree will prove his wife was unfaithful. So the two of them go looking for it.
