What Life and Debt Is About
The documentary looks at the economic and social situation in Jamaica, and in particular at what the structural adjustment policies of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have done to the island. The island a tourist sees is set beside the island shaped by loan agreements, and the cost of liberalisation to local producers is shown through concrete items: milk powder, bananas, garments. Stephanie Black directed the eighty six minute film, writing the text as an adaptation of Jamaica Kincaid’s book A Small Place, with narration by Belinda Becker. It premiered at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in New York in June 2001 and won the critics jury award at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
