What Life Off Grid Is About
Living off grid is not a state of mind. It is not about withdrawing somewhere remote. It has nothing to do with switching off your phone. The meaning is far simpler. It means not being connected to the electricity and gas infrastructure. The documentary sets out to find people living that way. The crew travelled across Canada for two years. The years run from 2011 to 2013. Two hundred people were interviewed. Their homes were all visited. Some live in forest, some on islands, some in desert. They take their power from the sun or from water. In winter everything is far harder. The film neither romanticises this life nor makes it look easy. The eighty five minute documentary is a Canadian production, the work of Jonathan Taggart, finished in 2016.
