What Life on a String Is About
An old blind musician travels between villages at the edge of the desert playing as he goes, with a young pupil who is blind as well. His own master told him that on the day he broke the thousandth string of his sanxian he could open the instrument and find the prescription that would restore his sight; he has been playing towards that for years and has reached the nine hundred and ninety fifth. The young pupil does not share the belief. He is in love with a girl from a village and will not give her up, against the wishes of both his master and her family. Chen Kaige, adapting a novel by Shi Tiesheng, builds the fable on the distance between faith and hope. The hundred and ten minute Chinese film was completed in 1991.
