Limbo

Women are being killed in Hong Kong and the left hand is cut from each body. The two policemen on the case could not be less alike: Cham is angry over the wife he lost and follows no rules, while his young partner Will follows procedure. Wong To, the woman Cham sent to prison years ago, is released and enters the investigation. Soi Cheang shot it in black and white and presents the city almost entirely as rubbish tips, narrow passages and back alleys, with the photography its real strength. The film is less a serial killer story than a film about where the people nobody looks at live. The violence is very hard and directed particularly at the woman. Who it is for: viewers who like Hong Kong crime cinema and visually singular thrillers. Who it is not for: anyone unable to take heavy violence and humiliation.
