Lemonade

After his father's death, Sait, who lives in Sivas, meets Efe, the half-brother who grew up in Germany. They do not know each other, do not like each other, and have nothing in common. They still end up in a minibus travelling together. The subject is not brotherhood but what it means to be two different sons of the same man. Sait is the one who was kept, Efe the one who was taken; both are justly angry and both aim that anger at the other. The form is a road film: wide landscape, the inside of a van and people met by chance. The humour comes not from humiliating the characters but from their failure to understand each other. It is Ali Atay's first film as a director. Among the writers are actors from the film, and the shared working habits of this theatre-trained group are visible on screen. In Turkey the film is remembered less for its box office than for festivals and the attention it gathered in later years. Ertan Saban plays Sait and Serkan Keskin plays Efe, with Funda Eryigit also in the cast. Who it is for: viewers who like Turkish road films and stories about brothers. Who it is not for: anyone expecting fast comedy; the film moves through long silences and pushes its emotional side forward.
