Ana Rocha de Sousa's 2020 film follows a Portuguese family on the outskirts of London coming up against social services over their deaf daughter. A misunderstanding at school becomes a report and the three children are taken into care; the family's poverty and the language barrier work against them at every stage. The film's strength is showing nobody as ill-intentioned: the social workers are applying their rules, and precisely for that reason the system becomes more frightening. Lúcia Moniz's mother carries the film, and the deaf child is played by a deaf young actor. It won the debut film award and the Orizzonti special jury prize at Venice. The story is merciless. Who it's for: viewers interested in social realist cinema and films about the experience of migration. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a hopeful close, or avoiding the subject of children removed from their families.
