Creed III

Michael B. Jordan directs himself here, and the series runs without Rocky for the first time; Sylvester Stallone stayed on as producer only. Jordan built the boxing out of Japanese animation and named his sources: Hajime no Ippo, Megalobox, Naruto, My Hero Academia and Dragon Ball Z. The biggest swing lands in the last bout, when the crowd, referee and stadium lights drop away and the two men trade punches in an empty void, hitting jail bars and a group home mattress. Cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau says the lighting there was matched to the childhood flashbacks’ colour temperature, so the passage argues about the past instead of decorating it. The format moves with the fights: drama stays in 2.39:1 while the bouts open to 1.90:1 IMAX, an expansion that vanishes outside a cinema. The arenas were built at ATL Film Studios in Georgia, not at Dodger Stadium. Adonis’s daughter is deaf and some home scenes are played in sign language. The opening weekend took 58 million dollars and the worldwide total reached 276 million, above both earlier Creed pictures. A good fit if you accept that the debt owed to Damian, not the training, is the engine and want the last bout to leave realism behind. Not for anyone waiting for Rocky to walk into a scene.
