What Glass Is About

M. Night Shyamalan paid for this himself, twenty million dollars, and that figure dictates the shape of the film. The confrontation everyone is waiting for happens in a car park rather than across a skyline, because the money for the other version never existed. A viewer expecting scale reads that as a betrayal, while a viewer who knows the number going in can read the anticlimax as the argument being made. The reason the film exists at all is equally unusual. Rights to the characters from the two earlier pictures sat with different studios, so the release was split: one company handled the United States and Canada while another took the rest of the world, and that arrangement is what bought the use of the Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson roles. The same history explains the childhood flashbacks. They were not reshot and no digital de aging was involved. Footage cut from the 2000 film and left unused was edited into this one, so that material is genuinely nineteen years older than everything around it. James McAvoy performs twenty one of the twenty four personalities on camera, switching inside the shot rather than across a cut, and that is where the real craft sits even when the plot disappoints. Philadelphia filming was planned for thirty nine days.
