What Little Dorrit Is About
Amy Dorrit spends her days earning money for her family and caring for her proud father, who has been in prison for debt for years; the prison is not an institution to her but the home she has known since birth. Arthur Clennam, the son of the family she works for, returns from abroad, and while looking into a dark matter in his own family’s past discovers that the two lives are bound together. The film was adapted from a novel and tells its events in two parts, first from the girl’s view and then from the man’s; the same scenes appear twice, with different knowledge. That structure also explains its length. Derek Jacobi and Alec Guinness appear in Christine Edzard’s three hundred and fifty seven minute British film, completed in 1987.
