What Little Red Flowers Is About
Fang Qiangqiang is four when his family leaves him at a boarding kindergarten. Everything there has a rule: when you eat, when you go to the toilet, how you dress. A child who behaves gets a little red flower stuck up on the board on the wall. Qiangqiang never gets one. First he badly wants them, then he stops wanting them, then he squares up to the teachers. The other children follow him for a while. Then he is on his own again. Zhang Yuan directs, adapting a novel by Wang Shuo. Ninety-two minutes, and the cast is all children. What the film is really about is not kindergarten but how obedience gets taught.
