Lola and Billy the Kid

Murat is seventeen, a Turkish boy born and raised in Berlin. The one whose word counts at home is his older brother Osman. Then Murat learns there is another brother, thrown out of the house years ago, and starts looking for him in the city at night. What he finds is Lola, a drag performer singing Turkish songs on stage. Kutluğ Ataman's 1999 film is set in Kreuzberg and is about people caught between two worlds: family and identity, the neighbourhood and the stage, Germany and Turkey. What Lola's boyfriend Bilidikid wants from Lola is its own kind of pressure. The film does not hide how hard it gets, and it does not reduce anyone to a type.
