Lola Igna

Eduardo Roy Jr.'s 2019 Filipino film follows Igna, an old woman waiting to die. The villagers, meanwhile, want her named the oldest grandmother in the world. A distant great-great-grandson arrives to film her. The film is about becoming famous and about old age turned into spectacle; the narrative does not reduce Igna to a lovable figure and keeps her language sharp. Angie Ferro leads. The tone is close to black comedy. The production is small and was shot in the countryside. Who it's for: viewers of Filipino independent cinema and narratives about old age. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a sentimental family film; the film refuses that.
